Tie thread on just above hook bend.
Tie on red bucktail tail and trim short.
Tie in copper wire for ribbing.
Tie in three peacock herl for body and wind thread up to about 1/4" before hook eye.
Strip the down from Chinese Saddle feather so just stiffer barbs are remaining, tie in as hackle, shiny side up, leaving thread about 1/8" before hook eye.
Wind all herl forward, tie off and trim tag ends.
Wind copper wire ribbing forward about five or six times in opposite direction of herl-wind, tie off and trim tag end.
Wind hackle five or six times close to thread, tie off and cut excess.
With thumb and index finger, push and hold hackle away from hook eye. Wrap thread loosely about 1/16" up the hackle base so that hackle holds about a 45 degree angle from the hook shank toward back of the fly. If you have hackle guards, they aid in this process.
Make a small head with the thread and whip finish.
Trim hackle length as desired. Shorter hackle works well if fishing dry and long is better for wet. |
